THE INSIDE STORY
Since 1986 I have had the pleasure of working as an illustrator. As the years pass I am increasingly thankful for my education at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston where I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree completing studies in illustration, graphic design, printmaking, and painting. Fresh out of college when digital print was not yet available, and full color art reproduction was quite costly, most of my first clients needed black and white illustrations to keep within a budget. I worked with pen and ink providing maximum "color" in shades of gray.
To create full color illustrations I was working mainly in gouache, another water based medium but with a very flat, rich, opaque quality.
I was also working in colored pencil. Playing with my children's block crayons I quickly discovered I could lay down broad strokes of expressive color that complemented the detailed colored pencil work.
Visual art as a storytelling medium reveals a wonderful world within a world.
I have learned to appreciate the depth of storytelling that can happen within a single piece of art. |
