THE INSIDE STORY
Since 1986 I have had the pleasure of being an illustrator. Editorial and poster illustration brought me to especially appreciate the depth of storytelling that can happen within a single piece of art. The years pass and I am increasingly thankful for my time at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston where I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree completing studies in illustration, graphic design, printmaking, and painting. Fresh out of college when digital print was not yet available, and full color art reproduction was quite costly, most of my first clients wanted black and white illustrations to keep within a budget. I pushed the limits of black to get as full a range of shades of gray as possible using pen and ink. For full color illustration I chose gouache, another water based medium but with a very flat, rich, opaque quality.
While experimenting with textures I began working in colored pencil. Soon after came another exploration... with my children's beeswax crayon blocks creating a broad expressive method of putting down swaths of color.
